Syd, Senegal Parrot, exploring

Syd, My Senegal Parrot, clambering on my books

Syd my Senegal Parrot, used to love sitting on the chair, quite peacefully watching me working on the laptop but now he has days that this is not in his little mind. At this moment he is sitting on his basket one foot up watching me, possibly a little sleepy. This was not the case a few moment ago, he clambered up on to some of my coffee table style books started chewing my 501 Must-Visit Islands, is this a sign, lately whenever he chews a book, it is normally a book I need to look at. Now he wants to say something, trying to talk, must be the music playing in the background, it’s a female voice. He loves the mirror nowadays, in the old days I got my ear chomped when he saw the mirror. I made this little mosaic mirror, with little pyramid designs and squares, like the sacred geometry symbols, it stands on my desk, he loves to sit in front of it, talks and knocks away. It has all opalescent tiles on that are now glinting in the sun with the dark golden pyramids pieces.

Senegal Parrot, can be very wise

My Senegal Parrot is so clever, amazing how he knows when someone is coming to the house, he screams, when I come home that excited noise, then he wants to give me kisses, the one where he kisses in the air to the left to the right of my cheek.

My Senegal Parrot-Syd, visit to the Vet

Senegal Parrot Syd and his Dr Gina

Yes it was Syd’s dreaded visit to his lovely dr dr, she is actually a lovely person called Dr Gina who specializes in birds or parrots. Syd gets to go every 6 months for his regular check up. Poor Syddie was in such a good mood prior to his visit, whistling on the way to the Reddam Circle to the vet. Once we got there he was not so happy with all the big dogs and cats in baskets, and the vet was running late. Eventually I took him outside where he calmed down a bit.

Then he went in with her and her assistant Tembi, I sat in the corner being quiet supposedly. First he got weighed, a healthy 202 grams, last visit was 180 grams, so after the winter he has is always healthier. Dr Gina puts Syd in a plastic container with air vents; he looks a bit panicky at me. Then he got his wings done quick, then the toenails and beak gets grinded with a small grinder. Afterwards he got his vitamin shots and de-worming drops. Of course he screamed non-stop like a big macaw would. I think he was deafening Dr Gina, suddenly his travel box was such a safe and secure place he shot in there, like this is home for know. Outside a girl was standing with her 1 year old African Grey on her shoulder; poor parrot probably heard poor Syddie screaming.

My Senegal Parrot, home at last

Once home he at first did not want to come out of the secure travel box, I coaxed him out. I am very thankful this is only a 6 monthly episode. Before I used to take him every 3 months but the last couple of years I have it down to March and September.

Syd, my Senegal Parrot posing angelically

Syd - Senegal Parrot posing

Syd my Senegal Parrot looks so angelic in this pictures, but don't believe this, he can't stand this thing. He absolutely does not like anything that is big, scares him. He was messing around near my laptop, so I got hold of this thing trying to get him away and somehow he got on it. It takes a while for him to get used to most things from toys to new items around him. He is a bit skittish even when a bird flies passed the window or past the open door.

My Senegal Syd

Syddie has still got the guava cravings, he had several pieces today, I really got to make sure he does not get too much. He has probably got a bit of a tummy ache tonight. Amazing that he loves guavas so much, before he loved the tomatoes from the garden, but this year they are not growing so nice. Took him for a little drive again trying to get him used to the car more as he is due for his 6 monthly vet visit or his doctor doctor, otherwise he just sees the car as a scary thing.

Syd, my Senegal Parrot eating guavas

My Senegal Parrot Syd, eating as they do

I caught Syd in the act of standing on the plate, he has started taking a liking to eating off an actual plate. He probably sees us doing that, so he wants to as well, simply climbing on it to make life a bit easier I guess.

He was pretty into eating his guava, he absolutely has a craving for guavas, you can hear him crunching on the pips. I will have to buy the tinned variety at the end of the season. I already have to get him black grapes that are imported from Eqypt as it is not grape season here.

Syd, Senegal Parrot, day life

Syd was having a bad day to today, I think he got a bit dehydrated, it was a warm day. I gave him some fruit and even sprayed his beak with some water, some went in his mouth. After that he was fine I took him for a drive in the car to the nearby park to get him out for a change of scenery. He was in a great mood afterwards, whistling and all, I guess parrots are like us sometimes we just need a change of scenery.

Syd eating his Naartjie

Syd my Senegal Parrot eating a Naartjie

Enjoy my beautiful Senegal Parrot Syd, so clever and adorable. It is a bit cold and fresh in Cape Town at the moment, even my parrot is feeling it. I had to put his warm blanket on the cage as he was shivering, must be the cold from Antartica finding its way up to the Cape.Parrots also have good and bad days, Syd has the odd day when he is pretty grumpy, but you have to take the good with the bad.

Syd in his vintage basket - Magnificent Senegal Parrot

My Senegal Parrot in his new basket

Syddie has chewed the first basket to bits, he can barely sit on the sides, I tried to get him a more modern version. But alas he was not having any of that, so I had to go hunting for this vintage style one. He only had it for a day and guess what he has chomped on it already, so he has to keep the old one for chewing.

Why I use a basket for my Senegal Parrot

Syd started chomping my ear and fingers when he turned three, so I don't allow on my shoulder or on my fingers. I then noticed he would climb on top of this old basket I had in my room, I then had a brilliant idea to carry him around in it and realized he loved sitting on top or just playing in it and of course chewing it. It originally belonged to my late granny, so it was quite a special one. What can I say he is a Senegal Parrot, you have to own one to know.

Parrot pictures - Senegal Parrot

Some gorgeous parrot pictures

Senegal Parrot - parrot pictures

Syd loves getting into my shoe cupboard, my poor shoelaces on my trainers and my silver findings all been bent. I need to learn to discipline him, I am working on it, got one of those crosskeys clicker things. Just need to get the hang of it. I was tidying my filing tray when he decided to climb up my jeans and get into it himself. I really have to work on the discipline thing, getting there, from the parrot pictures I am sure you can tell.
