Syd-Senegal Parrot now

Syd, my Senegal Parrot is 8 years old now, quite the independent boy now he decides what he wants to eat and when. So clever he makes his own decisions, bless him, trying to teach me something that is quite important, I need to make my own decisions. He has taught me notes to whistle, quite a good little teacher, you learn so much from animals in general. We have these squirrels coming around our place, Syddie gets a bit annoyed that they eat is nuts, monkey nuts. Today the door was open the one squirrel came in, he is our regular, it was raining so he was a bit bedraggled, if Syddie does not let out a wolf whistle. Then he picks up a monkey nut to show him that he actually eats them himself.
Syddie love Sarah Brightman's music Greatest Hits 2000 (it is from all the musicals) it almost sends him into a meditative state, he will stop what his doing and simply LISTEN, we need to do that as well in life, if we only listened we will be amazed at what we actually hear. He loves The Phantom of the Opera, Who wants to live forever.

Rainy, autumn day in Cape Town with Syd Senegal Parrot

Today Syddie is cold, its raining out, he has blankets over his cage, but I tried to get him to come out, no he was quite happy in his own cage (his house).
Talking about squirrels, learning from animals we have another one that must be related to the regular, so one day I could not understand why he could not see the nut. I realized he was blind, so you had to say something and he would smell it. Now we have a third one that has one eye closed, the bushy tail cut in half, strange, must have had an accident. They use all there other senses to find there way around but are just as agile to a certain extent. We also have a wild bird that was hurt that I have fed over the last month, I keep trying to get him to eat with the other wild birds but it is almost like they have rejected him. They really do need to blend in with the other animals, maybe there is a lesson for me as well, you need to do things in a balanced way. You can serve others but you need to look after yourself as well and you need to mix with others as well.

Syd Senegal Parrot's wishlist:

A playpen (so I don't stalk people on the floor)
Playcage ( a big one for out time in)
A little friend in the garden for daytime playing.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8624298334778428521.post-14297405196527168662013-02-14T20:18:00.002+02:002013-02-14T20:18:52.636+02:00Pretty Boy Syddie my Senegal Parrot

Such a cutie pie is Syddie my Senegal Parrot

Syddie my Senegal Parrot is so cute these days, he gets me to scratch his beak then he holds my finger tightly with all his. It is Syddie’s way of showing love and affection, Gratitude. Amazing animals naturally living in the Now, this is one of the Laws of Giving and Receiving, I wish sometimes we humans were the same.

Senegal Parrot Syddie in the Now

I learn so much from my Senegal Parrot Syddie; he really knows how to be in the moment. Be it having his bath, eating a grape or his beloved guavas, he still never tires of guavas. I am not so sure about the guava pips if anyone knows they are not good for parrots please let me know.

Habitual ways Syddie my Senegal Parrot

I am sitting in the winter sun well it is 23 Celsius, Syddie is having his bath, I just love to watch this little ritual, just brings awareness into the moment. The little feet go splash splash one at a time. The head goes in then he flattens himself for his chest. I did buy him a big bath, but no he uses his drinking bowl of course. Habits, I guess parrots have the same habitual ways as us humans.

Syddie Classical Music

Syddie is supposedly snoozing in front of his beloved mirror while I work on the computer. I am playing classical music, Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5; one of his eyes opens as the crescendo raises, then stillness, and piano playing away. Amazingly one eye is closed while the other is open. He likes Mozart as well, just as the music rises so he comes back to consciousness.

Today we are listening to Echoes of Nature the Rainforest, Syddie was going to sleep but the minute the music starts he is awareness itself. He is really intrigued with all the birdie sounds of nature, not so much the water sounds more all the birdie noises and insects. He actually comes to the end of the desk trying to listen more intently so I turned it up more.

See Syddie on his basket listening to music

He loves this basket of his, chomping on his monkey nut with more classical music on.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8624298334778428521.post-1908418387666921312012-03-19T15:09:00.001+02:002012-03-29T13:19:25.907+02:00In Syd Senegal Parrots words
In Syddie’s words, Senegal Parrot

I had to go to my doctor (vet) for my 6 months visit, not really my favorite. I love the drive there I whistle, love to see the scenery.

As my mom walked in with me my doctor says out loud of the “monster” is here, what is that about. I was not impressed; my mom said out loud I am beautiful, she said the aunty was saying it in an affectionate manner, right.

Dr calling me Syd a "monster"me a Senegal Parrot

Then to crown it she suggested to my mom to go for coffee she would be 20 minutes or so, my mom was thrown a bit she has come in with me for over 6 years now. I like to see my mom there I screamed blue murder I took on a persona of a macaw, the doctor and the assistants ears were buzzing. She said they needed mufflers and next time maybe to give me gas, right.
I won’t bore you with all the nitty gritty things but not really too impressed. I shot out of my travel box on getting home, I was extremely quiet felt quite hurt that my mom had left me. I am still unsteady on my feet due to my nails done with a grinder, down quite a bit and my beak, have to eat sideways, can’t hold my food. I also don’t smell so attractive what with the vitamin b injection and the de-worming stuff on me.

Syd Senegal Parrot bath after visit

So I decided to have a bath, which was not such a hot idea, with my feet being tender, so I have been feeling under the weather, it is taking a bit of time to recover this time round.

I have noticed recently that Syd my Senegal Parrot seems to be attracted to my Kipling Bag. He first chomped off the monkey’s thumb, I thought nothing of it, now when I come home and I put the bag on the chair, somehow he manages to get onto it. He propels himself onto the open bag. I am not sure if it is because he knows when I go out I have the bag with me or he wants to come with in the bag. Bless his little head, his so cute, see the pictures, new toy I guess, I can’t say I am too happy, slightly wary, I will have to find a new bag if he chomps anything else.

Some Syd Senegal Parrot Photos

Some cute pictures here and above of dear Syddie, he has another new thing at dinner, he announces “Sleeping”, if you make a bit of noise with a plate, he says “sleeping” again. If you leave the door open and there is a bit of a draft he also complains, moaning away. I guess we all getting little quirks and a thing as we mature, Syd is 7, and he turned 7 in January I did slightly forget. The lady in the pet shop did not order his favorite parrot toy with the wooden banana, peach and another fruit object that tastes like the fruits. I guess it is imported to South Africa and the reps don’t always deliver.

Syd my beloved Senegal Parrot and sleeping

Another new things is I must go lie down on the bed next to him when he goes to sleep, I did it the one time when he was a bit dehydrated now the expects it all the time. A real little monkey he is, he understands everything you say really. I told him the other day something was at his one foot, he was looking for it, straight away I told him he reached exactly where I said. Amazing.
I play Whitney Houston music to Syddie, so when he heard them playing it on the TV as they said Whitney Houston dead, he was all ears. He loves the music from the Bodyguard from Whitney, what a happening Whitney Houston 2012.
I am so thankful for this little Senegal Parrot who has changed my life, taught me to love again, that things are impermanent, to live in the moment. Parrots or birds are amazing to watch really, we could learn a thing or two from them, enjoying eating his guava completely engrossed or when he drinks his berry and guava fruit juice, he closes his eyes like his savoring the moment.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8624298334778428521.post-58329792985064492422012-01-11T20:11:00.000+02:002012-01-11T20:11:58.065+02:00Syd - Senegal Parrot 2012

Syd my Senegal Parrot over Xmas

Syddie really enjoyed going over the mountain (Ou Kaapse Weg) and coming back on Xmas Day to spend with the rest of the family. He was looking curiously at all the greenery, mountain, on the way back he could not stop whistling and talking away non stop. One little happy Senegal Parrot I must say, so grateful we took him with.

Syd the precious Senegal Parrot

Syddie loves listening to the Whispers of Happiness words by don Miguel Ruiz, there is a passage where one of the affirmations are children love to change there minds, you can change your mind you are a child, you are allowed to. I am not so sure these affirmations are good for my precious Senegal Parrot as he is starting to develop his own mind know. He wants to do things his way, he announces at dinner, sleeping, he says it several times now. I have to go in the car on Xmas day over the mountain, Ou Kaapse Weg, oh dear I have not driven over the mountain yet; I am a bit weary about this. I like going in the car now, getting quite used to it, my mom took me to the gas station the other day and to the shops, she just nipped in quickly.

More on the family over the Festive and me Syd-Senegal Parrot

I am going to my Uncle Michael and Aunty Jenny’s house; the whole family is going to be there. I am a bit worried about the 2 cats my Aunty Jenny has, she also has a couple a big dogs, my mom Rose will look after me.
The last time they went out they left me here the whole day on my own with the music going, filled my house with food, veggies and water. I even had lots of my favorite grapes, I never touched anything the whole day, and I was teaching them a lesson.

Syddie oh precious boy

Poor Syddie, he has had 10 days of having to share a room with me, I work at night, and so I need the light on, I did try and hang a sarong over the light. I also wake up very early, to do meditation and exercise. Well all I can say Syddie has not been getting his 13 hours sleep, which also makes him a bit cranky. You can hear him shuffling about, or he makes a noise of some kind.

Syd my Senegal Parrot is feeling better

Well he has had 2 good nights sleep now and he is feeling wonderful, waking up in better humor, full of beans, quite rested, jumping on his swing first thing in the morning. Amazing if you think how messing up his routine can affect him, I guess the whole world is surrounded with routines of some kind or other. He has at times not even wanted to play just sitting sleeping in front of his little mirror, listening to music, poor little boy.

I left Syd in my room where he was playing on the table and he can get to the windowsill, where he can see out the window. I thought he was quite happy, he had his lovely farm music by the 4 jacks and jill playing in the background. All those wonderful moo moo noises and tractors starting up. But of course he could hear all the girls chatting in the kitchen, it was Sunday and the whole family was around.

Lo behold here is Syd my Senegal Parrot strolling in

I was in the kitchen when suddenly I decided to look down, lo behold Syd is standing there on the floor next to the fridge, he must have strolled down the long passage to get there. Syd has perfected falling off things, since he has been to the vet in September for his wings clipping, he has decided he will find a way to get down. So his new trick is to pretend to slip, he has even practiced on his basket where he has figured it unbalances if he sits on a certain side.
I guess there is a lesson in it for me or all of us, none of us really like being alone, we are all connected to the universal mind. We are all one really, Syd just set his intention and promptly put it into action believing, never doubting that he could do it.

More on Syd my Senegal Parrot

Syd on his Squidoo lens, Syd is having a guava crisis, as it is the end of season here in South Africa, I will have to buy tinned ones.

Syd, my Senegal Parrot just loves chewing paper, of course the newspaper that he hates people to read, or hate is a bit strong. He constantly tries to get in the paper when you are reading it, climbing inside at every opportunity. Take a look at the pictures, so cute, normally he does not go all the way in but I caught him in action.

Syd with newspaper

Some days he chews up the newspaper at the bottom of his cage, ripping it to bits, all parrots seem to like the newspaper to chew. Of course he loves any piece of wood or wooden pegs as well.

Senegal Parrot, my life Syd

I wake up in the morning, then I get my favorite berry juice, then later I get rusk dipped in coffee, yes I know I am not allowed this, but what the heck once a day wont kill me. I get my normal veggies and I have my moms cereal with sesame seeds in it has to be the unshelled variety. I have cereals before the rusk dipped in coffee, so quite healthy really, my other food is some sunflowers, yes not so much, i mainly eat my walnuts and wholenuts and love to crunch on monkey nuts.

Syddie, me the Senegal Parrot and family member

Yes Sunday the house gets invaded with the rest of the family, Ethan who is 7 years old we watch the cartoon network together. I must confess he can be a bit rude, sometimes he kind of ignores me, it is so easy to acknowledge me, what can I say children of today. Then my aunty Jenny who wants to feed me, I do like her, but don't want her to do things to me, Andrew I am quite fond of he has a kind heart, Brigette as well. But it gets awfully noisy so it is nice and peaceful when they all go and peace abounds then.
Oh well this is the life of a Senegal Parrot, sleeping for me is 13 hours a night, sometimes I have a room mate Brigette.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8624298334778428521.post-17577662874615119212011-09-26T22:17:00.000+02:002011-09-26T22:17:55.559+02:00My Senegal Parrot Syd in the Now
Senegal Parrot Syd really Knows how to be in the Now

Animals are pretty amazing if you watch them, you can learn from them in some ways how to live in the Now, the present moment is all we have really.

Syd loves to play in tunnels, even if I have wider jeans on, he will try and put his head underneath, so here in the picture above he is going in to one of my boots. Clever really, it was a bit of a chilly day, getting warm I guess.

Syd my Senegal Parrot in the Now with some more shoes

All my trainers shoelaces have been chewed, he gives them all this funky look, even the metal eyes get a bit bent, do I get upset. I have to admit sometimes, but I am learning that this is just "what is", he is playing.

Now The Mirror and My Senegal Parrot Syd

He loves mirrors now, especially this one the mosaic one I made with some sacred geometry shapes, it has all opalescent tiles on. Syd has a whole conversation going on with the mirror, probably thinks its another bird there, but he is clever he will do something to make sure, like throw something over his head. In this picture he is sleepy, just sitting there being in the moment - NOW.

Syd my Senegal Parrot, used to love sitting on the chair, quite peacefully watching me working on the laptop but now he has days that this is not in his little mind. At this moment he is sitting on his basket one foot up watching me, possibly a little sleepy.
This was not the case a few moment ago, he clambered up on to some of my coffee table style books started chewing my 501 Must-Visit Islands, is this a sign, lately whenever he chews a book, it is normally a book I need to look at. Now he wants to say something, trying to talk, must be the music playing in the background, it’s a female voice. He loves the mirror nowadays, in the old days I got my ear chomped when he saw the mirror. I made this little mosaic mirror, with little pyramid designs and squares, like the sacred geometry symbols, it stands on my desk, he loves to sit in front of it, talks and knocks away. It has all opalescent tiles on that are now glinting in the sun with the dark golden pyramids pieces.

Senegal Parrot, can be very wise

My Senegal Parrot is so clever, amazing how he knows when someone is coming to the house, he screams, when I come home that excited noise, then he wants to give me kisses, the one where he kisses in the air to the left to the right of my cheek.
Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8624298334778428521.post-13170404514504282662011-09-08T13:30:00.000+02:002011-09-08T13:34:16.742+02:00My Senegal Parrot-Syd, visit to the Vet
Senegal Parrot Syd and his Dr Gina

Yes it was Syd’s dreaded visit to his lovely dr dr, she is actually a lovely person called Dr Gina who specializes in birds or parrots. Syd gets to go every 6 months for his regular check up.
Poor Syddie was in such a good mood prior to his visit, whistling on the way to the Reddam Circle to the vet. Once we got there he was not so happy with all the big dogs and cats in baskets, and the vet was running late. Eventually I took him outside where he calmed down a bit.

Syd-Senegal Parrot getting his vitamin shots

Then he went in with her and her assistant Tembi, I sat in the corner being quiet supposedly. First he got weighed, a healthy 202 grams, last visit was 180 grams, so after the winter he has is always healthier. Dr Gina puts Syd in a plastic container with air vents; he looks a bit panicky at me. Then he got his wings done quick, then the toenails and beak gets grinded with a small grinder. Afterwards he got his vitamin shots and de-worming drops. Of course he screamed non-stop like a big macaw would. I think he was deafening Dr Gina, suddenly his travel box was such a safe and secure place he shot in there, like this is home for know. Outside a girl was standing with her 1 year old African Grey on her shoulder; poor parrot probably heard poor Syddie screaming.

My Senegal Parrot, home at last

Once home he at first did not want to come out of the secure travel box, I coaxed him out. I am very thankful this is only a 6 monthly episode. Before I used to take him every 3 months but the last couple of years I have it down to March and September.

He absolutely does not like anything that is big, scares him. He was messing around near my laptop, so I got hold of this thing trying to get him away and somehow he got on it. It takes a while for him to get used to most things from toys to new items around him. He is a bit skittish even when a bird flies passed the window or past the open door.

My Senegal Syd
Syddie has still got the guava cravings, he had several pieces today, I really got to make sure he does not get too much. He has probably got a bit of a tummy ache tonight. Amazing that he loves guavas so much, before he loved the tomatoes from the garden, but this year they are not growing so nice. Took him for a little drive again trying to get him used to the car more as he is due for his 6 monthly vet visit or his doctor doctor, otherwise he just sees the car as a scary thing.

He was pretty into eating his guava, he absolutely has a craving for guavas, you can hear him crunching on the pips. I will have to buy the tinned variety at the end of the season. I already have to get him black grapes that are imported from Eqypt as it is not grape season here.

I gave him some fruit and even sprayed his beak with some water, some went in his mouth. After that he was fine I took him for a drive in the car to the nearby park to get him out for a change of scenery. He was in a great mood afterwards, whistling and all, I guess parrots are like us sometimes we just need a change of scenery.
Enjoy my beautiful Senegal Parrot Syd, so clever and adorable. It is a bit cold and fresh in Cape Town at the moment, even my parrot is feeling it. I had to put his warm blanket on the cage as he was shivering, must be the cold from Antartica finding its way up to the Cape.Parrots also have good and bad days, Syd has the odd day when he is pretty grumpy, but you have to take the good with the bad.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8624298334778428521.post-53288625280184422842011-07-03T20:53:00.000+02:002011-07-03T20:53:57.504+02:00Syd in his vintage basket - Magnificent Senegal Parrot
My Senegal Parrot in his new basket

Syddie has chewed the first basket to bits, he can barely sit on the sides, I tried to get him a more modern version. But alas he was not having any of that, so I had to go hunting for this vintage style one. He only had it for a day and guess what he has chomped on it already, so he has to keep the old one for chewing.

Why I use a basket for my Senegal Parrot
Syd started chomping my ear and fingers when he turned three, so I don't allow on my shoulder or on my fingers. I then noticed he would climb on top of this old basket I had in my room, I then had a brilliant idea to carry him around in it and realized he loved sitting on top or just playing in it and of course chewing it. It originally belonged to my late granny, so it was quite a special one. What can I say he is a Senegal Parrot, you have to own one to know.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8624298334778428521.post-48630557431158276552011-05-25T14:21:00.000+02:002011-05-25T14:26:45.804+02:00Parrot pictures - Senegal Parrot

Some gorgeous parrot pictures

Senegal Parrot - parrot pictures
Syd loves getting into my shoe cupboard, my poor shoelaces on my trainers and my silver findings all been bent. I need to learn to discipline him, I am working on it, got one of those crosskeys clicker things. Just need to get the hang of it. I was tidying my filing tray when he decided to climb up my jeans and get into it himself. I really have to work on the discipline thing, getting there, from the parrot pictures I am sure you can tell.
Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03757026857179105913noreply@blogger.com0
